5 Play: Raury gets ‘Higher,’ Migos make a movie

‘We always trend set’

“Higher” — SBTRKT feat. Raury
Most folks are familiar with Raury’s acoustic ways, but linking up the elusive SBTRKT finds the East Atlanta wunderkind putting his raps on display. SBTRKTs’s haunting production’s paired with lyrics that tread topics from segregation to Raury’s fallout with his father. “Higher” is the latest offering from SBTRKT’s forthcoming album, Wonder Where We Land (Sept. 22).

“The Righteous Ratchet” — Gilles
Image

Gilles doesn’t drink or smoke, but that doesn’t mean he can’t get a little ratchet. This Mista CJ-produced single from Gilles’ upcoming album Super. (Oct. 21), is fun, rude, and you can picture the lawyer-rapper saying something like, “sorry I’m not sorry,” after closing the session on this one. Think Childish Gambino without being emo.

“Briknik” — Goldyard

Goldyard’s been busy closing out their Fuck Culture 2 EP, and every now then In-Doe sends over tracks from the project with little to no explanation. We’re definitely not at mad at that as “Briknik,” which followed the Big Face Paper Gang collaboration, “Golden Eye,” is a telling, if not promising, sign of things to come. In-Doe recently told me that Fuck Culture 2 has a “darker” tone than its predecessor and as of now they’re just trying to get all of their features mixed down.

Soul & the Struggle USA (Mixtape)
Buddy Boi
Image Dubbed as “country conscious music” by DJ Burn One, this mixtape from South Carolina’s Buddy Boi is a look into peoples’ every day life struggles. DJ Wally Sparks joins Burn One on the hosting tip for the project, which they hail as “country rap tunes with substance,” with features from Young Buck, Project Pat, Blood Raw, and Young Noble. Download it here.

Bando (Film) — Migos
Rappers always talk about how their lives are movies, but in the case of Migos and a new short film, that statement is pretty accurate. In Bando, presented by Complex and directed by music video legend Rik Cordero, the lives of Quavo, Takeoff, and Offset are brought into focus with their own catalog of southern rap chant anthems. Like Jay-Z’s Streets is Watching, Bando is one long music video featuring several songs including, (you guessed it) “Bando,” “Contraband,” and other tracks from Y.R.N., and No Label 2. Think Streets is Watching with a little Snow on tha Bluff. “We had a different ambition, we had a different way and we always got money,” Quavo told Complex. “We always trend set. And we had some people down. I was down. But we came back up all together and all together we winning. This is how it all started.”
