First Slice 5-29-15: North and South Carolina’s industrial waste is coming on down to Georgia

Duke Energy fined for improperly disposing of contaminants in North and South Carolina, decides to haul them to Georgia landfill, plus more news.

A Georgia landfill is now the dumping ground for coal ash waste from North and South Carolina. After Duke Energy was slapped with more than $100 million in penalties for improperly disposing of the contaminants and polluting the environment there, they decided to clean it up and bring the industrial waste here. The company claims that the coal ash will cause no problems in its new home at the Banks County Waste Management facility because it will be stored and buried according to regulations.

The Buckhead Community Improvement District has released visuals for a $200 million park capping Ga. Highway 400. The ambitious plan could take up to a decade to execute and would cover nine acres, connecting Lenox and Peachtree roads, linking to the PATH400 trail, and providing access to the Buckhead MARTA station. The park would include open lawns, a stage, restaurants, and a dog park.

Parking ticket fines could soon triple from $25 to $75 during large festivals that draw crowds of more than 50,000 people. The Atlanta City Council will decide whether to implement the new policy during events like Music Midtown, the Dogwood Festival, and the Peachtree Road Race.
