Weekend Arts Agenda: A tragic taste of ‘Foxglove’ June 23 2016

This weekend, Foxglove makes its world debut at the Alliance Theater. The retelling of Tristan and Isolde’s tragic love story is set in 1950s Appalachia, scored to folk music from the period. The culminating work of the 2016 Alliance Theater Teen Ensemble, she show yanks at the heart. Be sure to catch it before it leaves on Sunday.

Foxglove runs from Thurs.-Sat., June 23-June 25, at 8 p.m., and Sun., June 26, at 2 p.m. at the Alliance Theater.

›› Friday’s your last chance to catch RECIPROCITY, hosted by the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. The striking, intimate works of Erika Hibbert resonate with viewers. As the artist tugs at and examines her own life, the viewer may see their life reflected in Hibbert’s. 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center.

ON SATURDAY:

›› Today marks the start of this year’s Old Fourth Ward Arts Festival. Across Historic Fourth Ward Park, the gala features nearly 200 artists, from fine painters to glassblowers to photographers and sculptors. Visitors can learn from professionals and enjoy the Emerging Artists platform to check out creators on the up-and-up. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at Historic Fourth Ward Park, thru Sun., June 26.

›› Saturday, the Southern Fried Queer Pride festival kicks into gear across the downtown area. Promoting activism, the arts, and a sense of community, festival programming is jam-packed: Attendees can attend a SWEET TEA: A Queer Variety Show, workshops and panels, as well as movie screenings. Hospitality Suites have been established this year, to provide opportunities to connect people who share experiences. Various times and venues.

ON SUNDAY:

›› The City of Conversation closes its run at the Horizon Theatre tonight, with one final showing. Set in Washington, D.C., the political drama follows a strongly Democratic family across multiple presidencies. When their son brings home a Republican girlfriend, things are thrown for a loop. 5 p.m. at the Horizon Theatre.
