Atlanta indie rockers Omni have released the third single from their debut LP Deluxe, due for release July 8 via Trouble In Mind. The song, titled “Wednesday Wedding,” combines elements of post-punk, math rock, and grimy ambiance. It’s a sound that Pitchfork dubbed “methodical and unrestrained, and mesmerizing the whole way through” when the group released the album’s first two sneak peaks, “Afterlife” and “Wire.”

The boys in Omni certainly have the chops to gain that kind of recognition. They’ve been on the Atlanta scene for years — guitarist Frankie Broyles did time with Atlanta favorites Balkans and later with Deerhunter circa Monomania. Bass player and vocalist Philip Frobos and drummer Billy Mitchell were two of the foremost members of the rock outfit Carnivores (Mitchell is also a regular CL music scribe). The band had the city’s back-catalogue of musical greats in mind as a nodding point for their latest single. “‘Wednesday Wedding’ to me is an ode to a lot of my favorite bands,” Frobos says. “I wanted to write a song that sounded like a mix of a Cindy Wilson-led B-52s song and the Clean. I’m pretty happy with where Frankie and I arrived.”

That arrival didn’t come easy. According to Frobos, the song almost didn’t make it on to the record at all. “Frankie Broyles and I labored over ‘Wednesday Wedding’ probably longer than any other song on the record,” he says. “After many days of not knowing where to go with it or whether to just move on, Frankie came up with the pre-chorus guitar part (‘white walls and advantages’) and almost immediately the chorus came to me. It all fell perfectly in place.”

All that effort results in a listen that’s as catchy as it is compelling. If “Wednesday Wedding” suggests what’s to come with the rest of Deluxe, the album is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Omni’s U.S. tour kicks off at the end of July, wrapping up with a show at The EARL on Fri., Aug. 26.
